Carly is a writer/director from San Francisco working across narrative film and live performance. She explores the tension between how we see ourselves and how we’re seen—especially in spaces where race, class, and identity shape social capital. Her work moves between intimacy and spectacle, tracing the cracks beneath social performance and personal mythology.
Her short films include Voice Toy (starring Nadina Hassan), currently on the festival circuit, and Spinning, which premiered at NewFilmmakers Los Angeles. She is also the creator and director of Crushing, an acclaimed nonfiction monologue series executive produced by Rosario Dawson, which sold-out runs in New York and San Francisco.
Her debut feature Two Roots, inspired by her relationship with her adopted younger brother, is currently in development through Cine Qua Non Lab. Steyer holds a BA in Film from Stanford University and previously worked as the creative assistant to director Ruben Fleischer and producer David Bernad (The White Lotus, Jury Duty, Zombieland).
